Magayon Festival

The Magayon Festival is a festival held every year in May as a as with the legend of Mayon Volcano. The holiday is derived from the name which means beautiful is beautiful in Tagalog. This celebration is also in honor of Nuestra Señora de la Porteria, the patron of Daraga. It is a legendary, historic and religious festival aims to revive the culture and people of Daraga, Albay.

The Magayon Festival is celebrated to commemorate the citizens of Daraga the legend of mountain Mayon. The legend tells the story of the love of a beautiful girl who named Magayon Daragang from Army or Kabikolan, before the separation of the Philippines on the island of Asia.

The Legend of Mayon Volcano

The Legend of Mount Mayon that has been the center of the celebration of the Magayon Festival is about the tragic love story of Daragang Magayon, who is considered as the most beautiful damsel at her time in the Kabikolan and a tagalog warrior named Panganoron. Their tragic love affair was believed to caused the mounting of the Mayon Volcano. The death of Daragang Magayon bring about the Mount Mayon and the clouds and the rains that often visits it is believed to be the spirit of her lover Panganoron. The rocks, the scary sounds and the earthquake believed to be the spirit of the envious and selfish suitor of Daragang Magayon, Paratuga.

Magayon Festival 2016

The event dates on March 28 - April 30, 2016 at Legaspi City, Albay, Philippines. During the celebrations, the streets come alive with the presence of diverse cultural events where the locals showcase their traditional way of life.

Sports lovers are not to be left behind as there are sports events on location where competing teams level it out on the field. For the business man with great acumen, there are trade fairs too, so you can still transact during your travels.


You cannot afford to miss out on the performances by the locals where they re-enact the tragic love story of Daragang Magayon. All in all, this is a fascinating festival for the whole family.
