Story

The protagonist of The Gruffalo is a mouse. The story of the mouse walk through the forest takes place in two phases, while the mouse uses cunning to evade danger.

The mouse goes for a walk in the woods and on his way encounters several dangerous animals (a fox, an owl and a snake). Each of these animals is clearly intended to eat the mouse, invites you to go home for a meal. The wily mouse disclaims any offer. To discourage new developments, he tells each animal to be having dinner with his friend, a Gruffalo, whose favorite food happens to be the animal in question. The mouse features the strange anatomy of the monstrous Gruffalo described. Fear that the Gruffalo can eat them, each animal flees. The mouse revels in itself, knows that the Gruffalo is a fictional monster:

Silly old fox / owl / snake, do not know? there is no such thing as a Gruffalo!

After it has been out the last animal, however, the mouse is surprised to meet a real bear and horrible Gruffalo and with all the features I fear the mouse thought he was inventing. True to its reputation, the Gruffalo threatens to eat the mouse, but again the mouse is cunning. He tells him the Gruffalo, mouse, is the most fearsome animal in the forest. Laughing, the Gruffalo agree to follow the mouse as shows how everyone is afraid. The two walk through the woods, finding in turn, animals that had threatened earlier with the mouse. Everyone is terrified by the sight of the couple and goes, and each time the Gruffalo becomes more impressed with the apparent hardness of the mouse. Exploiting this, the mouse threatening to eat the Gruffalo, which flees.

The story is based on a traditional Chinese folk tale of a fox borrows the terror of a tiger. Donaldson was unable to think of rhymes for "tiger" to invent a "knowing" instead.
