History
Training and Fingers Crossed (2000-2003)
Architecture in Helsinki began with Cameron Bird in the late 90 in Charlton, Victoria . Bird, Jamie Mildren and Sam Perry were part of a young band that combined funk and grunge called The Pixel Mittens . Then, the trio moved to the city of Melbourne . The band played one or two shows before entering a period of semi-dormancy. In 2000, while studying photography at art school, Bird met James Cecil. Both had an instant musical connection and a few months later, Cecil joined them playing drums. By that time, Bird met Kellie Sutherland at a party and invited her to play the clarinet in some songs of the band. The band began work on their first album in Supermelodyworld, a recording studio in Cecil built a church on the southeast side of Melbourne. The recordings stopped when Bird had to go to U.S. for a holiday, leaving the unfinished album. On his return, and inspired by his experiences in Portland , Oregon , ¾ Bird wrote songs for the album in 6 days. These new issues marked the new direction of the band: songs short and catchy pop. Back in art school, Bird met Isobel Knowles, Tara Shackell and Gus Franklin, who would complete the band. The three new members filled the spaces in the band to complete the album. After about two years of work, the debut album by Architecture In Helsinki Fingers Crossed , was released on February 9, 2003.
