Makati is a major city in the Philippines. It is located in the center of the capital region Metro Manila and has 529,039 inhabitants (census 1 May 2010). Makati is considered the economic and financial center of the Philippines.
Besides the two Philippine stock exchanges Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) and Philippine Dealing Exchange (PDEX) here are also many banks, such as the Metrobank located and other companies. The embassies of Germany, Austria and Switzerland are located in Makati.
The northern border is the River Makati Pasig, with the City of Mandaluyong across the river. To the east bordering Makati Pasig City and the municipality of Pateros, and further south and west connect the cities Taguig, Pasay and Manila the circle.
The name has its origins in the Makati word kati, the tagalischen word for tidal, and refers to the changing tides in the adjacent Pasig River. In the 12th Century the area was of Malays lived, an expansion of the settlement was, however, only under the Spanish influence in the 16th Century instead. During the Spanish era, the city was temporarily San Pedro de Macati called.

Today's main streets Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas to 1948 were the runways of the airport "Nielson Field" before the Manila airport by Parañaque City was postponed. Makati is today the most modern developed city in the country.
