Mount Apo

Mount Apo is a dead volcano a few kilometers southwest of Davao City on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines . With 2954 meters is the highest mountain in the country. Apo is Filipino for "grandfather of the mountains". The volcano is sacred to the indigenous population.
On 9 May 1936 Mount Apo received by President Manuel Quezon status of national park , with an area of 808 km ².



Geology
Strato volcano Apo has a flattened top with three peaks. There are several hot springs and lakes can be found on Mount Apo. When the last eruption took place is unknown, but the former activity still provides geothermal energy . A power plant makes use of this energy.



Flora and fauna
The Mount Apo is covered by a forest of tropical hardwood trees . The mouse Tarsomys apoensis lives include Mount Apo and here was first discovered. Another rodent in the area is Limnomys sibuanus . The genus Apomys is like Tarsomys apoensis , to the mountain. Some other species are also on Mount Apo for. Also one of the rarest orchids in the world is to be found on Mount Apo, the waling-waling ( Vanda sanderiana ).
The park is about 270 bird species, of which more than 100 endemic are. Among the rare species is the almost extinct Philippine monkey eating  eagle . Mount Apo is one of the few places where this bird in the wild to find.




Ascension
The first ascent of Mount Apo took place in 1880, the group led by Joaquin Thurs Rajal reached the summit on 10 October. Today, the mountain is one of the most popular climbing destinations in the country. The top is fairly easy to reach unlike other mountains like Mount Halcon and Mount Banahaw . The first part of the climb is fairly easy. Many hikers spend the night in the big hut at Agko Blue Lake at an altitude of 1200 meters, after about 4 hours to have run. At an altitude of about 1800 meters, the steeper climb. At 2400 meters is the second resting place at Lake Venado. From there it is about 3 hour walk to the top. The climb takes approximately 3 days to complete and is best in the period from April to May be performed. Expeditions can be harassed by local rebels.
