Hinuatan River

The Enchanted River takes its name from the many mysteries surrounding its breathtaking beauty. The locals have a lot of legends associated with the river, many of which involve a various supernatural beings. Some stories about people getting lost in the river or strong swimmers drowning in its depths, never to return.

Formally known as the Hinatuan river, the River Enchanted is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Surigao del Sur and the rest of Mindanao. This beautiful river is said to be shrouded in mystery and supernatural events in a way that has earned the reputation of being enchanted. There are many unexplained mysteries and features that this beautiful river has to offer to keep you guessing.

Some fishermen tell of encounters with species of fish that have never seen before could not be caught no matter what method or network they use. There are also stories of traps in the waters only to be found tangled on the ground the next day.

There are also a lot of "sightings" of strange creatures and beautiful girls, said to be enkantos that live in its depths and into the trees surrounding Balete. There are no contemporary documentation and evidence to prove these stories. You can feel free to think what you want to think. Could it be that there is no evidence, because it is not possible to capture on film an enkanto, can you? Perhaps because these are mere stories spun by people with an overactive imagination? Or, perhaps, these tales are made by those who seek to promote the "mystery" of the river to gain more tourists.

The presence of a spring has never been tried at the beginning of the Enchanted River, making it appear only in this river bursts its own life. Of course, groundwater sources are the logical source of water in this river, but the exact origin is yet to be found.

The current is strong enough so that those who can not swim are discouraged from jumping into the water without a life jacket. Several lifeguards watch over the swimmers but it is still best to exercise caution.

In addition, the water is quite salty along the river. Remember, the rivers are often classified as freshwater bodies; so, a salty river as the river Hinatuan is often seen as a freak of nature. So why is it salty again? Even in this case, there is not a definitive answer. However, it is a known fact that the river flows into the Pacific Ocean. Its proximity to the sea could mean that the underground springs that feed the river could get the salt water, when the tides are high.

How did the salt water get to the spring? Well, it could be due to possible subterranean caves or crevices. To date, however, no evidence has yet been put forward, adding to the mystery of this beautiful river. The river is also short so it would be logical to infer that what the skeptics are saying about the source of salt water could really be true.

For the briefest of this river, Hinatuan offers a remarkable feature: deep blue waters typical of the deepest parts of the ocean. This piece of dark blue water indicates the depth that this river has certainly extravagant, something that has never been measured in reality. Meaning, no one really knows the exact depth of the river enchanted because nobody has ever reached the bottom and lived to tell the tale (or so they say).

Now, considering that this is a popular river, you could probably ask how they have never been able to measure the exact depth. Well, a lot of people actually tried it, complete with diving equipment and modern gadgets - to no avail. There are caves under the river. Several expeditions by a team of experienced divers have never been a huge success. Some metropolitan areas can be mapped but no further step can be found to allow them to go beyond some parts of the cave or passage. Even those who have found passages in previous dives got a surprise in the form of blocked passages during their next dive.

Swim or take a dip in the river is prohibited for 1 hour, with a bell struck at 12 pm as a signal for the people to leave the water. At this time, the staff at the resort throw food in the water to feed the large fish that seem to come from nowhere. What is the mystery in that? You see, while people are having fun all day, only a handful of small fish can be seen in the waters. Yet, at the stroke of noon, when the bell rang, big fish suddenly go up and grab the food, feeding and foraging for that 1 hour. Then, just as silently as they had come, they are nowhere to be seen after the feeding phase designated.

Logic tells us that the fish, in particular, different schools of various species, could never be trained to wait for a bell to strike before swimming in a particular area. You could, perhaps, trains the fish in your aquarium (although this is highly unlikely!). This is another one of those mysteries that surround apparently disturbing the enchanted river.
