Banaue Rice Terraces

The Banaue rice (in Tagalog  : Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banaue) are rice 2000 years old built on mountains Ifugao by ancestors of the ethnic Batad, the Philippines. They are often called "the eighth wonder of the world. "
It is thought that the terraces were built with few tools, mostly hand with knowledge handed down from generation to generation. They are located at about 1500 m above sea level and covers 10 360 km 2. They are supplied with water by the rainforest pushing further up the mountains.

Banaue rice fields are part of the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, ancient structures of 2 000 to 6 000 years. We find these rice fields in the provinces of Apayao, Benguet, Mountain and Ifugao. They are listed in the World Heritage of UNESCO.

The locals still grow rice and other crops on the terraces, but the younger generations increasingly abandoning the agriculture, preferring where possible to work in tourism, since the terraces attract many visitors, including abroad. Because of this neglect, the "steps" terraces undergo erosion progressive, requiring reconstruction and maintenance basis.
