The coconut palm ( Cocos nucifera ) is a tropical tree of the family of the palm family, where the coconut grows.
The coconut fruit is formed of a core (or trunk) surmounted by a crown of wide sheets . In the axil of each leaf is usually inflorescence that develops in a regime responsible for coconuts. In appearance and relatively smooth light colored trunk door regular brands: each sheet produced by the tree leaves a scar in the shape of a crescent.
The difference between these scars can distinguish two types of coconut: the Great and Dwarves. Great in the gap between two leaf scars is greater than 5 cm . Among the Dwarves, it does not exceed 2.5 cm . In the ground, the trunk takes the form of an inverted cone, called root bulb. The entire surface of the bulb leaving thousands of roots which form a fairly thin mattress dense, distributed substantially in the first meter of soil. However, some roots reach 4 to 5 meters deep.
The leaf crown has thirty leaves, sometimes exceeding six meters long. A bud only manufactures all leaves and flowers . This bud operates continuously: the coconut grows inexorably, up until his death. Although the bud is very protected, its uniqueness gives the tree a certain fragility. When an insect is able to penetrate into the heart and devour the bud, coconut is doomed.
In the axil of each leaf is usually a spathe growing sharp and often ends exceed one meter in length. Come to an end, the spathe splits and releases the inflorescence. The latter is formed of a shaft on which are inserted spikelets . The female flowers are located at the bottom of spikelets cells are two to three centimeters in diameter. Their number is usually 20 to 30, but can reach several hundred. The male flowers are more numerous, occupy the upper spikelets. Still closed, their shape reminiscent of a grain of rice .
For all varieties of coconut, fruit organization is similar. A skin , first colored and gray-brown at maturity, surrounds a tough and fibrous envelope called "fluff." Nuts sold in markets have been débourrées to reduce their weight and volume. Then comes the hull, dark brown and very strong, which strongly adheres to the flock. Oblong to spherical, it reinforces three longitudinal ribs more or less marked. A thin film of reddish brown seed coat forms a link between the hull and endosperm white, shiny, 10 to 15 mm thick. The endosperm is commonly referred to as the almond. Inserted in one of the three germ pores, is an embryo of about 5 mm long. A liquid opalescent and sweet deals to three quarters of the internal cavity. It is commonly called " coconut water ", the term" coconut milk "is preferably reserved for preparations crushed almond.
