History

The current center was formerly Banahao and was a haven for the so-called accounting ships. Banahao belonged to the old district of Caraga, the later political and military Surigao District with the seat of government in the town of Tandag (now the capital of the province of Surigao del Sur was). Surigao was on 1 February 1752 officially became the permanent residence Récollets, a French branch of the Franciscan Order, after all the canonical books of the island of Siargao were brought here. The first canonical book bears the signature of the monk Lucas de la Cruz. Surigao was previously just a Vista the parish in Caoloon Siargao. The fleet of Ferdinand Magellan sailed on their world tour and after a brief stay on the island, Homonhon by the Strait of  Surigao.

In the Second World War on 24 and 25 October 1944 was here the battle in the Strait of  Surigao place between the Navy of the United States and the Japanese fleet. Surigao City is named after the old district (province) of the same name. Of which the name is derived is not clear. It probably derives its name from the Spanish word surgir from, which means "sparkling water" or "flow". With the division into two provinces of Surigao, Surigao del  Sur and Surigao Del Norte were on 31 August 1970 "notarized city."
