Papaya

Papaya ( Carica papaya ) or pawpaw tree, is a plant from the family of melon tree plants (Caricaceae). This tropical fruit crop is said to come from Mexico.

It is a berry tasty, generous complex flavors, ovoid or rounded, 21-31 cm long, edible pulp, which weigh about one kilogram (sometimes up to 5 kg ) and containing numerous seeds black surrounded by a mucilage. At maturity, papayas are yellowish green, with a juicy, orange-yellow.

Uses
It is one of the most important results and increased consumption. Very appreciated for its nutritional properties and delicate flavor. Ideal for regimes, it contains vitamins B1, B2 and B3 Niacin or all of the B complex, which regulate the nervous system and the digestive system; fortify the heart muscle, protect the skin and hair and are essential for growth. It also contains vitamins A and C, is rich in minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, sulfur, silicon, sodium and potassium. Moreover it has low calorie, about 53 calories per 100 grams of fruit. The fiber content improves digestion. It has astringent. Also, the shell contains a substance, papain , which has many uses.

The fruit is usually eaten raw, without the skin or seeds. The unripe green fruit of papaya can be eaten in salads and stews. It has a relatively high amount of pectin which can be used to prepare jams. The green papaya is used in Thai cuisine either raw or cooked.

The black seeds have a strong flavor but are edible. Sometimes they are ground up and used as a substitute for black pepper . In parts of Asia the young leaves of papaya are steamed and eaten like spinach . In some parts of the world are prepared as tea leaves to be consumed as prevention of malaria , although there is no real scientific evidence for the effectiveness of this treatment.
